Kybella is an injectable form of deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in fat breakdown and absorption. Kybella works by destroying fat cells when injected into areas of unwanted fat. Kybella received FDA approval in 2015 for treating submental fat, also known as a double chin. It has been discovered, however, that the procedure can also be used to destroy fat in other areas and has been called “mini-liposuction in a syringe”. Most patients feel only minor discomfort during the procedure. Since the procedure is non-surgical, recovery time is minimal afterward. However, you may notice slight redness and swelling in the treated areas.
